Hawthorne Study about the Performance of the Workers

Hawthorne study is a research about worker’s performance and worker’s ability in doing their job. This research was held in 1927 until 1932 and took place at western electric in Chicago. The researcher try to find out is there any connection between the brightness of the lamp with the worker’s performance. If there is a connection how big it will influence their performance.

They start it in 1927, one day the researchers and team set the lamp brighter than usual, with higher level of lamp the workers performance seemed improve so well and the researcher start to think that they almost get the answer of this research, but then when they set the lamp with lower level the worker’s performance become better than before, then they set the lamp with higher level again the worker’s performance be better, and better, and better. The researchers get confused about what is actually happening. Why the workers perform always become better and better although they change the level of the lamp. After 5 years doing the same test and get enough confused already, finally they get the answer or the conclusion of this research.

Actually the improving worker’s performance during the research is not because of the change of lamp level in their office. But it’s about their own suggestion or the motivational effect because they know they are being watched by another people and scoring them about all things that they do in the office. By knowing about this research we will know that everyone has a motivation, and motivational effect, attitudes, and etc that comes from inside our heart will encourage us more than money, prize, etc. So as a manager we need to encourage or find way to make our people have a good motivation to do their best in their job not just because the money.
