All about Shared symbols

Sometimes we assume that we are using shared symbols when we are communicating with other, though we might not be. Let us think about the word or term “ASAP”, which is known as “as soon as possible”. What does it actually mean? Do you have any idea? Think about it can help us to know the meaning.

Can you interpret the meaning of “ASAP”?

  • Someone from the other department calls you. He really needs something detailed about the information ASAP; but you are very busy and already doing your work.
  • A coworker comes to help you with your assignment or task. She really needs you ASAP; but you have not finished another job that you should finish it before lunch.
  • Your immediate recently supervisor, whom you like and love to please, asks you to make and type a memo for her/him ASAP; but you have already a lot of the other jobs to finish them soon.

 

What should you do? What is your perception and interpretation of the word “ASAP”? In the examples before, we have seen that the actual meaning of “ASAP” changed from the perception of “in a few days” into the perception of “immediately”.

Many words and phrases, also languages, are vague and have many different meanings and perception for different kind of people. So, the shared symbols are not really always completely shared to the others. The message that we are intended is not always the message that is really received.
